Heritage Community Doel & Polder

The Heritage Community Doel & Polder is an association that fights for the threatened heritage of Doel and its polders.

Heritage in the polders is more than just some relics of an agricultural and maritime past. The polders around Doel are the last remnants of an incomparable rural landscape. Terms such as ‘Polder Cathedral’ and the legend of the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe appeal to our imagination. Doel itself is a unique village in many ways. The 17th century checkerboard pattern of the village centre has been preserved to this day and is unique in Flanders. Doel also has more than 65 buildings with historical value…

The Heritage Community Doel & Polder is an international community, a network of heritage organisations in Flanders and throughout Europe. The swallow has become the symbol of our struggle. The swallow is the living link between nature, culture and infrastructure. A swallow flies 10,000 kilometres, but always returns to its old nest, his and our home! Heritage is a connecting force.
